Governor Evers approves WIS 65 resurfacing, safety improvement project

Work to close segment of highway in St. Croix and Polk counties to through traffic

Release date: May 8, 2023

To invest in Wisconsin's transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed an $8.85 million contract with prime contractor Monarch Paving Co. of Amery for a resurfacing and safety improvement project on WIS 65 from the north junction of Jewell Street in the St. Croix County village of Star Prairie to US 8 in the Polk County town of Balsam Lake. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, May 15.

To address deteriorating pavement and improve safety, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to:

  • Remove approximately 2 inches of asphalt from WIS 65 and overlay it with approximately 3.75 inches of new asphalt pavement.
  • Create a narrow, paved shoulder.
  • Reconstruct three areas of substandard vertical curves -- one between the St. Croix-Polk County line and the curve just to the north and two stretches between 28th and 38th avenues in the Polk County town of Alden.

With the need to fully reconstruct segments of the roadway, WIS 65 will be closed to through traffic, with motorists detoured via WIS 64, WIS 46 and US 8. Access to local properties in the work zone will be maintained.

Construction is scheduled for completion in September.
