Governor Evers approves Washburn County culvert replacement project

Structure carrying Yellow River under WIS 70 east of Spooner placed in 1964

Release date: August 4, 2023

To invest in Wisconsin's transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $1.13 million contract with prime contractor Janke General Contractors, Inc. of Athens for an improvement project on WIS 70 at the Yellow River east of the city of Spooner in Washburn County. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, Aug. 7.

Installed in 1964, the culvert carrying the Yellow River under WIS 70 has reached the end of its service life. To address this, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project will:

  • Remove and replace the existing culvert.
  • Replace the pavement on both sides of the structure.
  • Place new pavement markings and signage.

During construction, WIS 70 will remain open to a single lane of traffic controlled by temporary signals.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late October.
