As of January 1, 2019, you are now allowed to carry your IRP cab card and IFTA license as electronic images instead of paper IRP cab cards and IFTA licenses. The electronic image of the IRP cab card and IFTA license is not mandatory. This is just a different option to carry your credentials. All US States and Canadian Provinces are required to accept electronic images of IRP cab cards and IFTA licenses. For at least the first year, it is advised that you would continue to carry paper credentials. This will provide time for all involved to work out the details of this new program.
When stopped by law enforcement, credentials may be shown as an electronic image on a computer, tablet, or smart phone or as a paper copy. Please understand that by choosing to provide credentials by electronic device, an officer or official may need to temporarily take possession of the device to verify the validity of the credential.
Regardless of the format, the document must be accurate, accessible and readable by law enforcement.
We strongly suggest that the document be stored as a PDF on an electronic device in each vehicle, to ensure access to documentation while in areas of no service or WiFi. If you are unable to provide proof of credentials, you may be ticketed and required to present proof of registration to a court of law.
Be advised that trip permits such as 72-hour trip permits and unladen/hunters permits are not accepted in electronic format and must be presented in paper form. Make sure you print and carry the final paper permit if using one of these.
Please feel free to contact the Motor Carrier Registration Unit at (608) 266-9900 with any questions you may have.
The past pilot program for electronic credentialing is no longer applicable due to this finalized implementation of electronic credentials.
