Eligibility

​U.S. Veteran motorcycle license plates are available to any Wisconsin motorist who is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. The applicant for U.S. veteran motorcycle plates must be an owner or lessee of the vehicle owner or lessee or the beneficiary of a trust that owns or leases the vehicle.

Things you should know:

  • To qualify for the plate, you must provide a copy of your Department of Defense form DD214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty or equivalent documentation indicating you qualify as a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces pursuant to Title 38, United States Code (Veteran’s Benefits), Section 101. If you are unsure of your veteran status, contact the Veterans Administration Wisconsin Regional Office at (800) 827-1000, TTY (800) 829-4833.
  • A $15 issuance fee is required for a regular U.S. Veteran motorcycle plate. 
  • ​No special parking privileges are provided with U.S. Veteran motorcycle plates. See disabled parking identification permits for information about special parking privileges for persons with disabilities that impair the ability to walk. 
  • The U.S. Veteran motorcycle license plate can feature regular numbers or a personalized message. 
  • If you choose to receive personalized U.S. Veteran motorcycle, a $30 personalized plate fee is required in even years. A $15 personalized plate fee is required in odd years. ​

How to apply:

U.S. Veteran motorcycle license plates are not available at DMV customer service centers.

To apply for U.S. Veteran motorcycle license plates, please send the following items:

  1. If the​ vehicle you want to register with U.S. Veteran motorcycle plates is already titled/registered in your name, send:
    • A completed U.S. Veteran Motorcycle License Plate Information and Application MV2930 including proof of eligibility and the complete vehicle description
    • $15 issuance fee or, if you wish to receive personalized plates, $15 if registering in an odd year (e.g., 2015) or $30 if registering in an even year (e.g., 2016)
    • The biennial registration fee of $23 if your current plates expire within the next three months ​or the prorated registration ​fee if you have no plates
  2. If the vehicle is not titled/registered in your name, send: ​
    • ​A completed Wisconsin Title & License Plates Application MV1, or MV11 for dealer sales, including all other fees due
    • ​A completed MV2930 including proof of eligibility ​​
    • The Certificate of Title assigned to you ​by the seller
    • $15 issuance fee or, if you wish to receive personalized plates, $15 if registering in an odd year (e.g., 2015) or $30 if registering in an even year (e.g., 2016)
    • A prorated registration ​fee​ if you do not have plates or the biennial registration fee of $23 if your current plates expire within the next three months 
  3. Make the check or money order made payable to: Registration Fee Trust​.

Personalized license plates

Personalizing your U.S. Veteran motorcycle license plates is optional. A $30 personalized plate fee is required every two years in addition to the regular annual registration fee. On the U.S. Veteran Motorcycle License Plate Information and Application MV2930, check which option you would like us to follow if your request is not available. Please allow an additional 4-6 weeks for delivery. 

Visit Personalized plate search​ to find out if your choice for a personalized license plate is available. WisDOT may refuse to issue, or may recall after issuance, a request that may be offensive to good taste or decency, misleading or conflicts with any other license plate.
