Location
US 8, WIS 55 South in Crandon to WIS 32 South in Laona, Forest County
Overview
The proposed improvements include:
- Milling the existing pavement and resurfacing it with new asphalt areas along US 8 within the project limits except for the section between Fire Keeper and Bug Lake roads.
- Removing the climbing lane from Grandview Avenue to High View Drive and improving storm water drainage in the area.
- Reconfiguring the lanes between Wildwood and Grandview avenues.
- Making profile and horizontal adjustments on US 8 between Fire Keeper and Bug Lake roads.
- Grading slopes and removing cable guard throughout the corridor at existing cable guard locations.
- Replacing several culvert pipes.
- Installing a multi-use path that is being designed by Forest County Potawatomi Community from Fire Keeper Road to Love Knot Lane.
Traffic Impacts
During construction:
- Traffic on US 8 is anticipated to be detoured for the spot improvements in the vicinity of Youngs and Kwe Da Kik lanes.
- The proposed detour route will be WIS 32 to WIS 64 to WIS 55.
- Access to local residents and emergency responders will be maintained at all times.
- Single-lane closures with flagging operations will facilitate the rest of the construction operations.
- Temporary driveway closures will be necessary during parts of the construction process. WisDOT will contact homeowners and businesses in advance before closing a driveway.
Real Estate
Additional right of way will be required for this project in the following areas:
- Sidewalk curb ramps in Crandon to design curb ramps to current standards.
- On US 8 between Fire Keeper and Bug Lake roads to improve highway geometrics in the area.
- In areas of cable guard removal to extend the slopes to current standards.
WisDOT expects to begin real estate acquisition in March 2023.
