Location
Project Overview
The intent of the project is to resurface six miles of the I-43 Rock Freeway between WIS 164 and Moorland Road. Need for the project is based on pavement condition, and structural maintenance. Pavement in this area is beginning to deteriorate and experiencing transverse and longitudinal cracking. The most recent resurfacing of the project area was last completed in 2011. By the time the project is scheduled for construction, the pavement will be reaching the end of its service life and will be due for a resurfacing.
The project will address the deteriorating pavement condition and improve the vehicular ride quality. Project improvements include:
- Milling, patching and resurfacing the roadway with asphalt
- Repairing box culverts and retaining walls
- Various drainage improvements
- Replacing High Friction Surface Treatments at the roundabouts at Racine Avenue /County Y
- Replacing signs and pavement markings within the project limits
Traffic Impacts
Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) is 42,230 vehicles per day between WIS 164 and Racine Avenue/County Y, while the AADT between Racine Avenue/County Y and Moorland Road/County O is 57,350 vehicles per day.
Construction work along I-43 will be performed during the nighttime hours with single lane closures. The current posted speed limit in this area is 70 mph. To enhance traffic and worker safety, the speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph when construction activities are taking place.
The proposed work along the Racine Avenue/County Y roundabouts will be performed overnight utilizing intermittent full closures. Project construction is anticipated to last five to six months. Access for residents, businesses, and emergency services will be coordinated and maintained throughout construction.
