WIS 36 (Loomis Road): WIS 100 to 51st Street - Milwaukee County

Location

Project Background

The project need is based on pavement condition, and box culvert condition. The most recent major rehabilitation of WIS 36 was completed in 2011, and the pavement condition is poor. The box culverts approximately 1/6 mile north of W. Ramsey Avenue, and 1/5 mile south of W. Layton Avenue were constructed in 1934 and 1966 respectively, and in need of repairs. The Scout Lake pedestrian bridge was constructed in 1980 and is in need of repairs.

Proposed Improvements

This project will address the deteriorating pavement condition as well as bridge and box culvert conditions. The effect of the improvements will be improved vehicular ride quality and safety, and increased longevity of the bridge and box culverts. Project improvements include:

  • Milling, patching, and overlaying the roadway with asphalt
  • Replacing guardrail
  • Replacing pedestrian ramps to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards
  • Concrete surface repair to the box culverts approximately 1/6 mile north of W. Ramsey Avenue, and 1/5 mile south of W. Layton Avenue.
  • Concrete surface and girder repairs, drainage upgrades, and railing repairs to the Scout Lake pedestrian bridge, located approximately 1/4 mile north of W. Ramsey Avenue.

Public Involvement

WisDOT public involvement activities are designed to effectively involve the public early and often in the process so that project decisions are made in the best overall interest. For this project, outreach materials are being shared online in lieu of an in-person meeting. Anyone interested in the project is encouraged to review details, ask questions, and provide comments that will assist WisDOT during the project’s design and construction.

Traffic Impacts

Traffic management alternatives such as staging construction or shifting all traffic to one side of the roadway, or a combination of approaches are currently being evaluated. Time of year for construction is also currently being evaluated. Turning movements at intersections may be restricted at times, in order to facilitate construction.

Access for residents, businesses, and emergency services will be coordinated and maintained along W. Loomis Road during construction. Paving and repair work may need to be constructed in stages at driveways, and properties with multiple driveways may have some of the driveways temporarily closed for periods of time in order to facilitate construction. The roadway contractor will be required to give advance notice to the property owner prior to work at driveways which may cause partial temporary access modifications.

Schedule

Construction is currently anticipated in 2024, subject to change based on available funding.

Status

The project is in the initial design phase - Do you have any comments or questions? We'd like to hear from you! Please feel free to reach out to the project representatives listed in the materials, or on the bottom of this page.
