Project location
WIS 21 (City of Sparta E. limit to Emerson Road), Sparta to Tomah - Monroe County
Project overview
The purpose and need of this project is to improve the deteriorating pavement along this portion of WIS 21. The roadway is aged and deteriorated with heavy cracking and rutting in the wheel tracks. Secondary purposes will address deficient beamguard and high turning movements around Fort McCoy.
The preferred project alternative includes highway resurfacing along 15.77 miles of WIS 21, beamguard replacements, construction of median turn lane, and turn lane and shoulder widening.
Schedule
- February 2022 - Public Involvement Meeting
- Summer 2024 - Construction anticipated
Traffic impacts/detours
The project will be using single lane closures with flaggers for majority of project. A detour route will be used for the work operations around Fort McCoy improvements. During this time, WIS 21 will be closed to thru traffic, but will remain open for local and business access. The proposed detour route will use WIS 16 and WIS 131 for both westbound and eastbound traffic. The detour is expected to be in place for approximately 2-3 weeks.
