Oneida Nation, WisDOT unveil dual-language signs
WisDOT’s
dual-language sign initiative launched in 2021. The Oneida Nation is the second tribe in Wisconsin to install dual-language signs.
The sign unveiling took place September 30 on the westbound Duck Creek bridge (WIS 54) walking path in Oneida, Brown County. Speakers included representatives from the Oneida Nation, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and WisDOT leadership.
Oneida Nation’s youngest students from the Oneida Language Immersion Program attended the sign unveiling. Tribal members wore orange in observance of Orange Shirt Day and its recognition of Indigenous Peoples' resiliency and the legacy of North American Indian boarding schools.
The new tribal boundary signs feature the Oneida Tribal Seal next to the tribe's name in their native language –
Onʌyoteˀa·ká· – (O-na-yo-day-aah-GAaa) the traditional name for the reservation, which means “The People of the Upright Stone."
The sign located near the Duck Creek bridge includes the words
Taluʔkowanhné Da-lew-go-wonh-NAY), which translates to “Place of Bountiful Ducks," and
Kawyhuhat (Gaw-who-ha-DA-di), which means "River Flowing Along.
"Native preservation and languages go to the heart of a tribe's unique cultural identities, traditions, spiritual beliefs, and self governance. We look forward to revitalizing the Oneida language through these signs."

WIS 29 and County VV Multimodal Interchange

On September 28, 2022 WisDOT, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Brown County, the villages of Hobart and Howard, and the Oneida Nation celebrated the completion of the WIS 29 and County VV interchange, west of Green Bay.
The Oneida Nation’s support of the project, throughout six years of consultation and construction, was a critical factor of the project’s success. The Oneida Nation also contributed land for the right-of-way connection to the reservation.
In recognition of their critical land contribution, the Nation was granted the naming of the new local street connection to the new interchange. With great pride, the local street connection was named County TS/Oneida Way.
Construction started in May 2021 and included work on both the state highway and local road system.
Project improvements
- Construction of a diamond interchange at WIS 29 and County VV
- Realignment of Milltown Road
- Connection from County VV to North Overland Road
- Removal of the existing Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersection at County VV
- Removal of access to WIS 29 from County U
- Installation of broadband to support Intelligent Transportation Systems

Project funding
- The Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant has a total cap of $27.8 Million (71% federal and 29% local)
- Total project cost was $25.4 million (including design, utilities and real estate)

WIS 54 Duck Creek Bridge Corridor
The new Duck Creek Bridge and pedestrian bridge, located on the Oneida reservation, opened to traffic in 2014.
This project is the result of coordination between WisDOT Northeast Region and members of the Oneida tribe.
WisDOT met with members of Oneida Division of Land Management monthly to keep the project on schedule.
The new Duck Creek Bridge will provide public transportation both vehicular and multimodal for years to come.
This project also expanded on the current trail system in Oneida and used the existing bridge as a pedestrian overpass, finishing a Safe Routes to School grant that the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin received.

WisDOT, along with the Oneida tribe, received an award from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for its cooperative work purchasing the real estate for the Duck Creek Bridge.
WisDOT worked with the Oneida community on turtle designs for roundabouts as part of improvements on WIS 172 and WIS 54 (Duck Creek Bridge Corridor). These unique fixtures are built to state safety and material standards just like any other roundabout, but the community input and partnership helped to make this project stand out.
