The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is seeking public feedback on proposed improvements to WIS 64 in Langlade County. The purpose of this outreach is to obtain your input on the identified needs and proposed design details. We appreciate your input and encourage you take a moment to review the project information and provide comment.
Location
5.4 miles of WIS 64 between Clover Road to Fifth Avenue Road in Langlade County
Public handout
WisDOT has created a public handout for this project. Please feel free to download, print and share with anyone who does not have access to this website. The handout include a prepaid mailer for public comments.
Project purpose and need
The pavement on WIS 64 is showing signs of deterioration. The pavement was originally constructed in 1967 and last resurfaced in 2011. Curb, gutter and guardrail are also in need of upgrade, and a culvert pipe needs to be replaced near Hankey Road due to deterioration. The shoulders need to be widened to 5-feet (currently 3-feet) for on-street bicycle accommodations in Polar east of County S.
Proposed improvements
This is a resurfacing-level improvement with the following construction elements:
- Milling 2-inches of the existing pavement and paving 2-inches of new Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) on WIS 64 outside of the community of Polar (rural section).
- Widening the existing 3-foot paved shoulders to 5-foot paved shoulders in the rural sections from County S to the east project limits. The total paved and gravel shoulder will remain at 10-feet.
- The wider paved shoulder will provide on-street bicycle accommodation along WIS 64.
- Milling the existing asphalt full depth and paving 6-inches of new HMA pavement within the community of Polar.
- Removing and replacing the existing curb & gutter along WIS 64 within the community of Polar.
- The proposed curb & gutter will be placed to narrow the roadway 4-feet on each side.
- Narrowing the roadway will eliminate on-street parking and provide for on-street bicycle accommodations outside of the vehicle traveled lanes.
- Replace guardrail
- Replace deteriorated end section of culvert near Hanke Road.
- Permanently remove existing parking lot pavement placed up to the back of curb and gutter and on WisDOT right-of-way. Replace with soil and typical urban seed mix.
Project benefits
The project will provide a smoother riding surface which lessens wear on vehicles, extends the life of the pavement and reduce future maintenance costs. Wider shoulders will improves safety for bicycle traffic.
Schedule
- Project preliminary design kickoff -Spring 2021
- Public involvement -2022
- Preliminary plans – Summer 2022
- Environmental document – Summer 2022
- Final plans – May 2024
- Construction currently scheduled in 2025
No Real Estate
No real estate acquisitions or easements are anticipated.
Traffic Impacts
During construction WIS 64 will remain open to traffic. Construction will be conducted using lane closures and flagging operations. Very short, temporary driveway closures will be necessary when paving operations are conducted in front of individual driveways. The project engineer will contact property owners in advance of driveway work. Access to Mueller Lake and Mueller Lake Road will be maintained.
Business Resource: WisDOT’s In This Together program
WisDOT recognizes businesses located in work zones or impacted by detour routes have special needs. It includes promotional examples, case studies and a specially designed Business Coordination Guide with information on:
- Planning ahead
- Staying informed
- Keeping customers informed
- Tips for businesses
- Temporary business signage for businesses in the detoured portion of the project limits.
