Project location
This project is located at three intersections along WIS 57 in Door County.
- The WIS 57 and County H intersection is in the town of Brussels.
- The WIS 57 and Stone Road intersection is in the town of Nasewaupee.
- The WIS 57 and Cloverleaf Road intersection is in the town of Nasewaupee.

Project purpose and need
The purpose of the proposed action is to improve safety at the WIS 57 intersections with County H, Stone Road, and Cloverleaf Road while maintaining acceptable traffic operations. There is a history of right-angle crashes at these intersections, and they have qualified for federal Highway Safety Improvement Project (HSIP) funding.
- The need for the proposed improvements is to reduce the number of crashes at the intersections, particularly right-angle crashes, and to maintain the traffic operations of the intersection.
- The intersection of WIS 57 and County H has seen fifteen crashes from 2016 to 2020 resulting in one fatal crash and ten injury-type crashes.
- Of the fifteen crashes, fourteen were right-angle crashes.
- The intersection of WIS 57 and Stone Road intersection has seen 17 crashes from 2016 to 2020, resulting in eleven injury-type crashes.
- Of the seventeen crashes, fourteen were right-angle crashes.
- The intersection of WIS 57 and Cloverleaf Road has seen six crashes from 2018 to 2022, resulting in one injury-type crash, which was fatal. Of the six crashes, four were right-angle crashes.
Anticipated benefits
The currently proposed improvement involves reconstructing the existing WIS 57 intersections with County H and Stone Road to
Reduced Conflict U-Turns (RCUTs). The RCUT intersection reduces the number and type of conflict points and simplifies decision-making, while still allowing all turning movements to be made at the intersection. By eliminating the minor road crossing movement, the RCUT intersections are expected to decrease right-angle collisions and the severity of crashes at the intersection.
The currently proposed improvement also involves modifying the existing WIS 57 intersection with Cloverleaf Road to remove left turns onto and crossing maneuvers of WIS 57 from Cloverleaf Road. The modified intersection would consist of right-into, right-out of, and left-into Cloverleaf Road movements only. The intersection modification is expected to decrease right-angle collisions and the severity of the crashes at the intersection. Traffic operations are expected to remain satisfactory with shorter delays.
The project will also include some spot pavement repair work on the WIS 57 thru lanes to provide a smoother riding surface resulting in less wear on vehicles and reducing costly pavement maintenance.
Proposed improvements
Proposed improvements at the WIS 57 intersections with County H and Stone Road include:
- Reconstructing the intersections with RCUTs, including slotted right and left turn lanes added at each WIS 57 approach and U-Turns added along each WIS 57 approach to replace the minor road crossing movement.
- Reconstructing the WIS 57 intersection at Cloverleaf Road to remove left turn and crossing maneuvers of WIS 57 from Cloverleaf Road
- Curb and gutter including median islands
- Culvert and storm sewer modifications
- Lighting at the County H and Stone Road intersections
- Pavement markings
Traffic impacts
- During construction, WIS 57 will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction for portions of the work.
- Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures along WIS 57.
- County H, Stone Road, and Cloverleaf Road (north of WIS 57) will be closed at times at WIS 57.
- Cloverleaf Road south of WIS 57 will remain open at all times.
No work will be permitted during the following timeframes:
- Memorial Day: From noon, Friday, May 23, 2025 to 6 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2025
- Summer peak restrictions between Independence Day and Labor Day
- WIS 57 northbound lanes: From 6 a.m. Fridays to 6 a.m. Mondays
- WIS 57 southbound lanes: From 6 p.m. Fridays to 6 a.m. Mondays
- Weekend restrictions:
- Noon, Fridays to 6 a.m. Mondays, between Memorial Day Weekend and Independence Day Weekend, as well as various weekends after Labor Day Weekend for fall events.
