In December 2021, the Wisconsin Transportation Project Commission approved the department to study new alternatives that address safety, congestion and maintain a state of good repair on US 53, WIS 35 and WIS 16 in La Crosse. The corridor will be split as three separate studies as detailed below.

WIS 35 Corridor: WisDOT anticipates the first public involvement for the WIS 35 Corridor to be held in early 2024.
US 53 and US 14/61 Corridor: WisDOT anticipates the first public involvement for the US 53 and US 14/61 Corridor to be held in early 2024.
WIS 16 Corridor: WisDOT anticipates the first public involvement for the WIS 16 Corridor to be held in the Summer of 2024.
Study overview and locations
WIS 35 Corridor - The purpose of the WIS 35 study is to develop alternatives that improve safety and address traffic operations concerns where practicable, while addressing existing and projected infrastructure needs through the design year (2050).
- Study Limits: WIS 35 (West Ave, Lang Dr., George St.) from US 14/61 (South Ave) to US 53 (Rose St.)
US 53 and US 14/61 Corridor - The purpose of the US 53 and US 14/61 study is to develop alternatives that improve safety and address traffic operations concerns where practicable, while addressing existing and projected infrastructure needs through the design year (2050).
- Study Limits: US 53 and US 14/61 (3rd, 4th, Copeland Ave, Rose St.) from WIS 35 (West Ave.) to I-90
WIS 16 Corridor - The purpose of the WIS 16 study is to develop alternatives that improve safety and address traffic operations concerns where practicable, while addressing existing and projected infrastructure needs through the design year (2050).
- Study Limits: WIS 16 from the WIS 16/Losey Blvd. intersection to I-90 and WIS 157 from WIS 16 to I-90
Previous studies
WisDOT recently completed the La Crosse Safety and Operations study. The objectives of this study were to gather data for the project roadways, identify current and future safety and operational concerns, and identify and evaluate improvement alternatives that address these concerns. The two reports linked below are the results of that study.
