Study overviews

South Study

The South Study will assess how best to accommodate traffic volumes with a focus on safety and access, with consideration or incorporation of the goals for the corridor outlined in the city of Madison’s Stoughton Road Revitalization Plan.

North Study

The North Study will assess how best to accommodate traffic volumes with a focus on safety and access issues that affect travel along Stoughton Road.

Backgrounds

In November 2011, the Transportation Projects Commission approved the US 51 (Stoughton Road) Study corridor as a Major study candidate, and WisDOT began an environmental impact statement study.

In November 2017, due to statewide priorities and funding limitations, the US 51 (Stoughton Road) Study could not obtain funding for final design and construction. As a result of the funding delay, WisDOT postponed completion of the study.

In early 2022, WisDOT resumed evaluation of the corridor with a new approach: complete two separate studies – one on the southern section of the corridor (Voges Road to WIS 30), and one on the northern section of the corridor (WIS 30 to I-39/90/94). This flexible approach allows the study teams to address issues and needs specific to each section, with special consideration in the South Study for the city of Madison’s Stoughton Road Revitalization Plan, and consideration in the North Study for issues related to access and land use development.
