I-41/I-94 Mitchell Interchange Resurfacing - Milwaukee County

Mitchell Interchange - Rawson Avenue to Howard Avenue/35th Street

Overview

The intent of the project is to resurface the I-41/43/94/894 interstate highway between Rawson Avenue, Howard Avenue and 35th Street, approximately 6 miles

The project will address the deteriorating pavement condition and improve the vehicular ride quality. Project improvements include:

  • Milling, patching and resurfacing the roadway with asphalt
  • Replacing High Friction Surface Treatments
  • Addressing joint maintenance at bridge approach slabs
  • Repairing retaining walls and noise walls
  • Resurfacing the College Avenue Park & Ride lots
  • Various drainage improvements
  • Replacing pavement markings

The I-41/43/94/894 interstate highway carries approximately 180,000 vehicles per day. The proposed project will maintain the current number of lanes and lane configurations.

Public Involvement

WisDOT held a virtual public involvement meeting in fall of 2020, and again in the spring of 2022 to present and discuss the proposed project. WisDOT public involvement activities are designed to effectively involve the public early and often in the process so that the project decisions made are in the best overall interest. Traffic Impacts

Traffic management alternatives such as off-peak/nighttime closures, and off-peak/nighttime ramp detours will be utilized for the project. The project construction is anticipated to last for approximately 6 months.

Access for residents, businesses, and emergency services will be coordinated and maintained throughout the project limits during construction.

Schedule

Project is scheduled for construction in 2024, but could be advanced to 2023, pending funding.
